This is the "Site of the Martyrdom of the 26 Saints of Japan." This memorial remembers the twenty Japanese Christians and six European missionaries who were crucified by the local government in 1597. Their souls were canonized by the Pope in 1862 and the modern monument pictured was constructed one hundred years later.
