Tochoji Temple is the oldest Buddhist temple in Japan of the Shingon sect, established by the philosopher monk known as Kukai. The main hall is home to the largest wooden statue of Buddha in Japan (not to be confused with the giant Buddhas in Nara and Kamakura which are made from bronze).
