Here is the kitsune or fox. There are numerous kitsune sculptures of all shapes and poses throughout the shrine grounds and mountain paths. Many people mistake these white foxes for the diety Inari (whose spirit is enshrined at Fushimi Inari), but they are actually only the messengers of the god.
