Here is the entrance to the omatsuri or festival that I went to on Saturday night. An omatsuri is basically like a giant street fair, with all sorts of booths that sell fried foods, sweets, and games of chance at highly inflated prices. It is customary to wear kimono and yukata to omatsuri, especially in the summer when it is super hot and humid. While I didnit get to wear mine, I did see lots of pretty Japanese girls decked out in beautiful kimono with their hair done up in 10-foot tall vertical sculptures. You can see that there were spotlights in the background of the picture. At one point during the evening it started to rain and you could see the individual water drops flutter down through the powerful white light. Of course, my camera failed to capture the beauty of the illuminated rain, but take it from me; it was an image straight out of a Disney fairytale.
