This time I'm giving a shout out to the best anpan I've ever tasted. I was introduced to this shop two years ago by a coworker at Columbia. Now, every time I'm in Ginza I swing by. If you love red bean, RUN as fast as you can to Kimuraya!
For those unfamiliar, anpan is a bread roll filled with sweet bean paste. It's hard to enter into a discussion about Japanese sweets without hitting upon anpan. Heck, there's even a superhero made of the stuff here in Japan.
The most common variety of anpan is filled with red bean paste, though Kimuraya sells all different types of rolls, with fillings such as white bean paste, cheese, or even custard.
My recommended variety is the "sakura" (pickled cherry blossom) anpan. These rolls are made with a pinch of pickle that creates the perfect balance of salty and sweet while nibbling. Or, if you're me, double-fisting anpan into your face.
The best part about Kimuraya is that they basically bake anpan constantly, so you'll almost always receive a warm one.
If you're used to the normal convenience store varieties, there's nothing quite like biting into a freshly baked anpan with the smooth, warm red bean filling. Think of it like a Japanese Krispy Kreme.
Darn...now I've made myself hungry again!
B.E.W.
