Imperial Palace (皇居)

Since I was around Tokyo Station yesterday, I decided to take the short walk to the Imperial Palace grounds (Kōkyo). I think this was my first time visiting the area, which is sort of strange considering it is one of the most popular tourist spots in all of Japan. The area was absolutely mobbed with people; most seemed to be visitors from neighboring China and Korea.

Except for January 2nd (New Years) and December 23rd (Emperor Akihito’s birthday), the Imperial Palace is closed to the general public. The farthest you can make your way is up to the main gate, where armed guards and a big fence keep you at the proper distance.

However, the areas surrounding the palace, such as Kitanomaru Park and the Fountain Garden have all been beautifully maintained, and serve as the perfect spot for a picnic or a quick nap in the shade.

Enjoy the pictures below!
