The original Urakami Cathedral was completed in 1925 after 30 years of work. At that time, it was the largest church in Asia. The bomb detonated roughly three kilometers northwest from the planned hypocenter of Mitsubishi Steel and Arms Works, exploding directly above Urakami Cathedral and reducing the building to rubble.
