This giant statue is part of the Green Tokyo Gundam Project. The Project's goal is to dedicate souvenir proceeds towards expanding parks and public green spaces within the city.

However, another large reason for constructing the giant robot was to further bolster spirit for the city's bid at the 2016 Olympics. You can spot the city's Olympic logo on the robot's left shoulder.
