"We are fools whether we dance or not, so we might as well dance." - Japanese Proverb

This is male enka singer Hosokawa Takashi (細川たかし). He sang his first number in a suit like this and his second number in a white kimono while tons of pink feather-clad dancers galloped around the stage like a Vegas show. Hosokawa-san didn't give me the time of day when I met him, but he didn't give anybody the time of day, so I didn't feel particularly bad. When I bowed and entered his dressing room, he was barking orders at his manager to get him some sweet-bean rolls from the snack room, and the glare coming off of his novelty-sized rhinestone studded west coast rapper's watch hurt my eyes.
Hosokawa mumbled 'nice to meet you' in my general direction, never looking me in the eyes. He turned to Shimura Bucho who always did my initial introduction and asked him where I was from and what I was doing there, never addressing me directly. Kaori, my 23-year-old friend and co-worker from the enka division was also there. Hosokawa-san turned to look at her and said, "You're Japanese right?" She nodded. "Where are you from?" Kaori made a joke, apologizing for the fact that she was from the boonies due to her hometown's location in Hokkaido. I laughed at the joke - it was cute. Hosakawa-san turned to Shimura Bucho and said with a dismissive laugh "OH, he understood that." I thanked Hosakawa-san for his time and left the dressing room.
